Group personalities

Groups work together best when there is a mixture of different personalities within the make up of the team. We need the activists to involve themselves completely within the current projects, to be the ones who take the first step and be the centre of the activities; the reflectors are needed to allow observation within the group and think about consequences before the action. Then there are the theorists, the logical thinkers of the group, they ask the rational questions in order to analyse the situation; finally we have the pragmatists, they visualise the groups ideas in practise, to the point and eager to act quickly to make ideas real.    

All these personality balance out the operations of a group, they compliment each other for the success of the team, however in practice we may not always get a balanced group and if so, as a group, we must learn to create the balance ourselves.

I initially read they learning style survey and the 4 results I might get; Activist, Reflector, Theorist and Pragmatists. I thought at first that the Reflector profile may be most relevant to me however i could see elements of each profile in my personality. When I took the test it reveled that an activist was most dominant in my learning style with reflector being only moderate.

I can perhaps see the connections with each of the profiles and feel that I have become more of an activist through university. I feel that the group projects have brought out that side of me more although I still feel that many aspects of the reflector in me still show through.

When I thought about my group and their learning styles I initially thought there would be a spread of personalities as I thought our group worked well together, perhaps though leaning more to the activist score. Our group results appeared to be very high on the activist scale however each member had an alternative style that was close behind, this could work to our advantage for our group dynamics. In order for us to tone down the dominant activist style we can take it on ourselves to become more like our alternative learning style.  

Other things that our group should do to improve a balance of styles in our team are to;

  • Reflect more about our projects, think first react after.
  • Ask ourselves the questions that we may never have thought relevant before, “Does this seem coherent?”, “Will this work?”
  • We shouldn’t force out the activist with in us but instead introduce new and alternative approaches to the team meeting; write down an agenda for the meeting in order to work in a step by step manner
  • Ask ourselves to put our ideas into practise, bring out disciplines into question more often.
  • Become more aware of the past and present and not just the current issues; understand the process of planning ahead

I think that this method of breaking the group into components seems appropriate to help us understand the working of the team. Recognizing our strengths and weaknesses within the group will allow us to improve our skills on projects we do together, also it will improve our communication skills as we will recognize the type of people we are dealing with in order to take into consideration people’s opinions and feelings.
